Our Big Date

Back in the wonder years...

Life was so darn good...

My family moved to the suburbs...

Into a new neighborhood...

Hanging out with my new friends...

Riding bikes until dinner time...

We all felt completely safe...

Because there was no crime...

We played lots of games everyday...

On our perfect neighborhood streets...

We’d run outside after dinner was through...

For the delicious ice cream truck treats...

Summertime was so much fun...

We played late into the night...

Our world was safe and very clean...

Almost every home had a street light...

On my first day of junior high...

I said ‘hey’ to this new girl...

That was the moment when I first felt...

My youthful butterflies beginning to unfurl...

She sheepishly smiled back at me...

Then she quietly responded with ‘hey’...

That was the moment when I realized...

It was going to be a beautiful day...

She looked like a Disney princess...

With her long and straight dark hair...

Her eyes were a delicious chocolate brown...

All I could do was stand and stare...

I walked her home from school...

While carrying her heavy book pack...

When we arrived at her family’s house...

Her grandmother made us a snack...

Even though I was only thirteen...

My crush was both real and hard...

She captained the school’s dance team...

They practiced in the junior high school yard...

I finally mustered up the courage...

To ask her to our school dance...

I wore a purple velvet jacket...

And my new navy blue pants...

She wore a beautiful dress...

Purple with pretty white flowers...

Ours was a most wonderful night...

I wished it had lasted for hours...

We danced to early 70s music...

Nary a song did we miss...

But once our music stopped playing...

I don’t remember ever getting a kiss...

You see, she liked an older guy...

He had a car and he was richer...

Even though we never actually kissed...

I still got to keep this picture...

As I said, I was only thirteen...

But I’ll never ever forget our date...

Even though we never actually kissed...

Maybe fifty years later it’s still not too late...
